What to Expect from a Telehealth Appointment

Booking and attending a telehealth appointment with Therapy Hub is straightforward. Here is what happens from start to finish.

1

Book your appointment

Book online through our booking system or call our admin team on (08) 6384 7040. Let us know you would like a telehealth appointment and we will match you with the right clinician.

2

Receive your link

Shortly before your appointment you will receive a secure video link by email or SMS. No downloads are required, simply click the link to join from your phone, tablet, or computer.

3

Prepare your space

Find a quiet, private space with good lighting and a stable internet connection. Make sure your camera and microphone are working. For some sessions your clinician may ask you to show a specific area of your home or workplace.

4

Attend your session

Your clinician will join the call at your appointment time. Sessions run in the same way as an in-person appointment, your clinician will discuss your goals, conduct any relevant assessments, and develop a plan with you.

5

Receive your notes and plan

After your session, your clinician will send through any relevant notes, home programs, or resources. Follow-up appointments can be booked online or by calling our admin team.

6

Claim your rebate

Depending on your funding type, you may be eligible for a Medicare, NDIS, or private health rebate. Our admin team can help you understand what applies to your situation before your appointment.

Telehealth Requirements by Discipline

Each allied health discipline has its own professional standards and funding requirements for telehealth. Here is a plain-language overview of what applies to each service we offer.

🧠

Occupational Therapy

AHPRA registered

Occupational therapists at Therapy Hub are registered with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia through AHPRA. All registered OTs can deliver telehealth services in line with AHPRA's virtual care guidelines and the OT Code of Conduct.

There is no blanket rule preventing a first OT session from occurring via telehealth. However, our clinicians are required to assess whether telehealth is clinically appropriate for each individual client. In some cases, such as where a physical home environment assessment or hands-on assessment is needed, an in-person visit may be recommended instead.

Informed consent must be obtained before commencing telehealth, and our clinicians use a secure, encrypted video platform for all sessions.

Psychology

AHPRA registered

Our psychologists are registered with the Psychology Board of Australia through AHPRA. Telehealth psychology sessions are widely accepted as clinically effective and are fully supported under Medicare's Better Access initiative.

To access Medicare rebates for psychology via telehealth, you will need a valid referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) from your GP, psychiatrist, or paediatrician. Medicare covers up to 10 individual psychology sessions per calendar year, and telehealth sessions attract the same rebate as in-person sessions.

As with all telehealth services, our psychologists assess whether video-based sessions are clinically appropriate for each client. Telehealth may not be suitable for all presentations, and your clinician will discuss this with you before your first session.

Physiotherapy

AHPRA registered

Our physiotherapists are registered with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia through AHPRA. The Australian Physiotherapy Association supports the use of telehealth across a broad range of clinical presentations, including musculoskeletal conditions, rehabilitation, pain management, and more.

Telehealth physiotherapy works well for assessment, education, exercise prescription, and progress monitoring. It may not be appropriate for presentations that require hands-on treatment, such as manual therapy. Our clinicians will assess suitability on a case-by-case basis and will let you know if an in-person appointment is recommended.

There is no rule preventing a first physiotherapy session from occurring via telehealth, though this will depend on the nature of the presenting issue.

Speech Pathology

SPA certified practising member

Speech pathology is not currently regulated under AHPRA's National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. Instead, the profession is self-regulated through Speech Pathology Australia (SPA). Our speech pathologists hold Certified Practising membership with SPA, which requires ongoing professional development and adherence to SPA's Code of Ethics and practice standards.

Telehealth speech pathology is well-supported by evidence across a range of presentations, including language delays, speech sound disorders, stuttering, and literacy difficulties. Our clinicians can deliver assessments and therapy sessions via video for clients of all ages.

As with all our telehealth services, your clinician will discuss whether telehealth is the right option for your specific needs before your first session.

Is Telehealth Right for You?

Telehealth is a great option for many clients but may not suit everyone. Here are some situations where it tends to work particularly well.

Clients who live in regional or remote Western Australia
Clients who find it difficult to travel due to disability, illness, or caring responsibilities
Clients with anxiety who find clinic environments overwhelming
Clients who prefer the flexibility and convenience of attending from home
Clients who need continuity of care when travel or illness disrupts clinic attendance
Families and carers who want to be present and involved in sessions

Not sure if telehealth is right for you?
