About DVA Funding
Allied Health Care for Veterans, at No Cost
The Department of Veterans' Affairs funds a wide range of healthcare services for eligible Australian veterans and their dependants. At Therapy Hub, we accept both the DVA Gold Card and DVA White Card, which means eligible clients can access our allied health services with no out-of-pocket expenses.
DVA-funded allied health services require a referral from your GP or medical specialist. Once referred, your treatment is covered under the DVA allied health treatment cycle, which provides up to 12 sessions per referral period. You can have as many treatment cycles as your GP determines are clinically necessary.
Not sure whether you are eligible or which card you hold? Our friendly admin team can help clarify this before your first appointment. Call us on (08) 6384 7040 or enquire online.
Understanding Your DVA Card
Which Card Do You Have?
DVA issues different cards depending on your service history and accepted conditions. Here is what each card means for your allied health entitlements.
Gold Card
Broadest coverageThe DVA Gold Card provides the highest level of coverage available. Gold Card holders can access treatment for all medical conditions, whether service-related or not, at no cost.
Typically issued to
Veterans with 60 or more impairment points under MRCA, those assessed as Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI), and certain veterans aged 70 or over with qualifying service. War widows and widowers may also be eligible.
White Card
Service-related conditionsThe DVA White Card covers treatment for conditions formally accepted by DVA as service-related. It also includes mental health coverage for eligible veterans under Non-Liability Health Care arrangements.
Typically issued to
Current and former ADF members, including some reservists, who have one or more conditions accepted by DVA as service-related. Many veterans leaving the ADF now receive a White Card automatically, which includes mental health coverage.
Orange Card
Medicines onlyThe DVA Orange Card is limited to prescription medicines, wound care items, and nutritional supplements at a concession rate under the Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (RPBS). It does not cover allied health services.
Please note
If you hold only an Orange Card, you will not be able to access DVA-funded allied health services at Therapy Hub. You may wish to discuss other funding options with our admin team, such as Medicare or private health insurance.
What We Offer
Services Available Under DVA
Therapy Hub offers four allied health disciplines under DVA funding. All services require a GP referral and are subject to the DVA allied health treatment cycle.
Occupational Therapy
OT can assist with daily living skills, home assessments, assistive technology, workplace modifications, return-to-work support, and functional capacity assessments. Available in clinic, via mobile visit, and via telehealth.
Psychology
Psychology services are available for Gold Card holders for all mental health conditions, and for White Card holders for accepted conditions and all mental health conditions under Non-Liability Health Care. Gold Card holders are not subject to Medicare's annual session cap.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy is available for a broad range of conditions including musculoskeletal, post-operative rehabilitation, chronic pain, and injury management. TPI Gold Card holders are not subject to treatment cycle limits for physiotherapy.
Speech Pathology
Speech pathology services are available for communication and swallowing difficulties. Available for conditions covered under your DVA card, including age-related or service-related conditions affecting speech, language, and swallowing.
How to Access DVA Services
Getting Started With DVA Funding
Accessing DVA-funded allied health services at Therapy Hub is straightforward. Here is what you need to do.
Visit your GP and ask for a DVA referral to the allied health service you need. Your GP will complete a DVA referral form specifying the condition to be treated and the service required. Allied health providers cannot refer you to another allied health provider under DVA.
Call our admin team on (08) 6384 7040 or book online. Let us know you are a DVA card holder and have a referral. We will confirm that we accept DVA funding for your required service and arrange your first appointment.
Bring your DVA card (Gold or White) and your GP referral to your first appointment. Your clinician will develop a treatment plan with you and begin your care. You will not be charged any gap fee.
Your referral covers up to 12 sessions or 12 months, whichever comes first. At the end of each cycle, your clinician will send a report back to your GP. If ongoing treatment is needed, your GP can issue a new referral and a new cycle begins.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I be charged a gap fee?
No. By accepting your DVA Gold or White Card, Therapy Hub agrees to accept the DVA fee as full payment. You will not be charged any additional gap fee for services covered under your card.
Do I need a referral every time?
You need a referral from your GP or medical specialist to start each treatment cycle. Each referral covers up to 12 sessions or 12 months. Once a cycle ends, your GP can issue a new referral if further treatment is needed.
Can I access services via telehealth?
Yes. DVA-funded psychology, occupational therapy, and speech pathology services can be delivered via telehealth. Physiotherapy is also available via telehealth in many cases. Please contact our team to confirm availability for your specific service.
Can I still use Medicare instead?
You can choose to be treated as a Medicare patient rather than a DVA patient, however DVA will not contribute to any services already paid for by Medicare. In most cases, using your DVA card will result in lower or no out-of-pocket costs compared to Medicare.
What if I am not sure whether my condition is covered?
Our admin team can help clarify this before your appointment. You can also contact DVA directly on 1800 VETERAN (1800 838 372) to confirm which conditions are listed on your White Card, or to check your Gold Card entitlements.
Can family members of veterans access DVA funding?
Some dependants of Gold Card holders, including partners and children, may be eligible for certain DVA-funded services, including mental health support. Please contact DVA directly or speak with our admin team to discuss your specific circumstances.
