Recovering From a Motor Vehicle Accident in WA

Every registered vehicle in Western Australia is covered by motor injury insurance administered by the Insurance Commission of Western Australia (ICWA). If you are injured in a motor vehicle accident involving a WA-registered vehicle, ICWA can fund your medical treatment and rehabilitation, regardless of whether you were the driver, a passenger, a pedestrian, or a cyclist.

ICWA's focus is on helping you recover as quickly as possible. After the accident, see your GP, report the crash to ICWA, and obtain a referral to the allied health services you need. Once your claims officer has approved your treatment, Therapy Hub can begin your care with no cost to you.

Therapy Hub works with ICWA-funded clients to provide occupational therapy, psychology, physiotherapy, and speech pathology as part of your recovery. Not sure how to get started? Call our admin team on (08) 6384 7040 and we will walk you through the process.

You May Be Covered Even If You Were Not the Driver

ICWA motor injury insurance is broad in scope. Here is who is eligible to make a claim for treatment following a motor vehicle accident in Western Australia.

🚗

Drivers

If you were driving a vehicle and were injured in an accident involving another vehicle or an incident on a public road, you may be entitled to treatment funding through ICWA.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑

Passengers

Passengers injured in a motor vehicle accident are covered regardless of who was at fault. This includes passengers in taxis, rideshare vehicles, and public transport.

🚶

Pedestrians

If you were struck by a vehicle as a pedestrian, you are eligible to make an ICWA claim for treatment and rehabilitation, even if the vehicle did not stop at the scene.

🚲

Cyclists

Cyclists injured in a collision with a motor vehicle can access ICWA-funded treatment. You do not need to be in a vehicle to be covered under the WA motor injury scheme.

Cover applies to accidents involving WA-registered vehicles anywhere in Australia. If the vehicle involved was registered in another state, a similar CTP scheme in that state may apply. Our admin team can help clarify this if you are unsure.

Getting Started With Your ICWA Claim

The ICWA claims process is straightforward. Here is what to do after a motor vehicle accident to access funded treatment at Therapy Hub.

1
See your doctor as soon as possible

After a motor vehicle accident, visit your GP or go to an emergency department as soon as possible to have your injuries assessed and documented. Early medical attention supports better recovery outcomes and ensures your injuries are on record before your claim is lodged.

2
Report the crash online

The owner or driver of the vehicle involved must report the crash at crashreport.com.au. Passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists who were injured also need to submit their own injury notification. Allow around 40 minutes and complete the form in one sitting as it cannot be saved and resumed.

3
See your GP and obtain a referral

Visit your GP as soon as possible after the accident. Your GP will assess your injuries, document your condition, and provide a referral to the allied health services you need. This referral is required before ICWA will approve allied health treatment.

4
Receive your treatment number

Once ICWA receives your crash report and injury notification, they will assign you a claims officer and provide a treatment number by SMS or email. Your claims officer will advise which treatments are approved. Your treatment number can be saved as a digital claiming card on your smartphone.

5
Contact Therapy Hub

Your clinician will develop a treatment and rehabilitation plan with you. We bill ICWA directly using your treatment number via HICAPS. There is no cost to you for approved treatment at Therapy Hub.

📋

Claims manager approval required

💡

Reasonable and necessary treatment

ICWA funds treatment that is reasonable and necessary for your recovery from injuries sustained in the accident. Your treating clinician will document the clinical justification for all services provided. ICWA may request progress reports to support ongoing funding.

⚖️

Pain, suffering and economic loss

In addition to treatment costs, ICWA may also compensate for economic loss (inability to work) and pain and suffering, depending on the severity of your injuries. These are separate to your treatment entitlements and may require legal advice. This is not something Therapy Hub can assist with directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to wait until my claim is approved to start treatment?

No. ICWA encourages early treatment as it supports better recovery outcomes. You can start treatment immediately after the accident. Report the crash as soon as possible and ICWA will provide you with a treatment number to use with your providers.

I was a passenger. Am I covered?

Yes. Passengers injured in a motor vehicle accident are covered under the ICWA motor injury scheme regardless of who was at fault. Pedestrians and cyclists injured by a vehicle are also covered.

What if the accident happened interstate?

If the vehicle involved was WA-registered, ICWA covers injuries sustained anywhere in Australia. If the vehicle was registered in another state, a similar CTP scheme in that state may apply. Contact our admin team and we can help clarify which scheme applies to your situation.

Do I need a GP referral to see a Therapy Hub clinician?

Yes. A referral from your GP is required before ICWA will approve allied health treatment. We recommend seeing your GP as soon as possible after the accident so your injuries are assessed and documented promptly, and a referral can be issued to the relevant services.

Do my sessions need to be approved by a claims manager first?

Yes. Before we can begin treating you under ICWA, your claims officer must approve the treatment. Our admin team will liaise with your claims officer to confirm approval before booking your first appointment. Ongoing sessions may require periodic re-approval as your recovery progresses.

How is ICWA different from workers compensation?

Workers compensation covers injuries that occur at work or as a result of your employment. ICWA motor injury insurance covers injuries caused by a motor vehicle accident, regardless of whether it happened during work hours. If your accident happened while you were driving for work, both schemes may potentially apply. Our admin team can help clarify this.
